How It Works

Unlike a traditional sewing machine, the Novum SP1000 uses specially designed barbed felting needles instead of thread. As the needles punch through the fabric layers, the barbs catch, pull and interlock fibres, permanently bonding them together. This process allows you to felt wool roving into fabric, embed yarns and decorative fibres, and create raised, sculpted textures with remarkable depth and consistency.

The machine operates without feed dogs, meaning the fabric is moved entirely by hand. This gives complete freedom of movement in all directions — forwards, backwards, sideways and diagonally — allowing you to “draw” with fibres in a highly intuitive, expressive way.

The SP1000 is often used alongside a conventional sewing machine, enabling you to embellish fabric panels first, then transform them into finished garments, cushions, bags, wall hangings or fibre sculptures.
